Rules & ramps
Verified 2026-07-15- Minimum wake — steerageway only inside the Coatue Point–West Jetty line (Town Code §137-14).
- Discharge & mooring rules — no garbage, graywater, or sewage; permits required (Ch. 278). The Code does not treat sleeping aboard alone as liveaboard status: the vessel must be considered a residence, as determined by the Harbormaster. Vessels classified as liveaboards may use the Boat Basin or an authorized mooring, not anchor (Ch. 278 §§278-3, 278-4L, 278-5D).
- Public ramps — Children’s Beach (2 lanes, no trailer parking); Madaket — Walter Barrett Pier & Jackson Point.

Anchoring
Verified 2026-07-15- Published anchorage — “Anchorage in Nantucket Harbor may be had in depths of 6 to 17 feet off the south and southwest sides of Brant Point” (U.S. Coast Pilot 2, 55th ed. (2026), Ch. 4, ¶234). The same passage also identifies the general anchorage south of Brant Point and cautions against anchoring in the fairway, ferry maneuvering area, or cable area.
- Overnight and the 48-hour line — Town Code defines a transient vessel as visiting for no more than 48 hours. A vessel using Nantucket waterways for more than 48 hours that is not berthed or trailered must use a permitted or rental mooring; when no suitable berth is available, the Harbormaster may allow a transient vessel to anchor in an approved area (Ch. 278 §§278-3, 278-4M).
- Exact boundaries are not published here — the Harbormaster says patrols enforce no-anchoring zones, but the published Town Code and Harbormaster pages read for this card do not give their exact boundaries or blanket permission for an overnight stay. Confirm a location before dropping anchor: 508-228-7261 or VHF .
- Liveaboard is a separate status — Ch. 278 defines it as sleeping aboard while the vessel is considered a residence for a period determined by the Harbormaster. If the Harbormaster classifies the use as liveaboard, anchoring is prohibited; use the Boat Basin or an authorized mooring (§§278-3, 278-4L, 278-5D).
